CHOOSING A FERTILIZER FOR YOUR LAWN

CHOOSING A FERTILIZER FOR YOUR LAWN

IF STARTING A NEW LAWN

  • A new lawn fertilizer will be high in phosphorous (the middle number)
    • Phosphorous promotes root development, which allows lawns to be able to withstand stress from heat, weeds, disease, and drought
    • ***using a turf starter more often than required, could cause a build-up of phosphorous, and poison the soil

IF FERTILIZING IN THE FALL

  • Fall fertilizers¬† are usually high in potassium (the last number)
  • Potassium is used by grass to aid in stress, cold, and heat tolerance, as well as disease resistance

IF FERTILIZING A LAWN IN SPRING

  • If the lawn does not need to be heavily over-seeded, then using a fertilizer with a high nitrogen content (1st number) is advisable
